Question

In my role as an advanced practice nurse (APRN), interprofessional collaboration is going to be used and appreciated to great lengths to ensure my patients get the best quality care possible... that is, if they can get access to it. If I feel my patients need a specialist, such as a consult for cardiology or psychiatry, I want to trust that my patients have access to the care I am referring them to. The one quality measure I want to address in today's discussion post is: access to healthcare. Scope and Impact of the Issue Access to care is a quality measure that is lacking for many members of our communities. According to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services(2022), what makes something a quality measure, is that it is a factor in preventing the goal of patient care, including"effective, safe, efficient, patient-centered, equitable, and timely care." The National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report (2021), states some measures that can predict a person's access to healthcare include whether the patient has health insurance, if they have a usual or established source of care, if they face structural barriers such as transportation to the place of care, and event provider availability.
