PSY4107 Qualitative Research Methods
Assignment - Interpretative phenomenological Analysis
LO2 Recognise and apply the most appropriate qualitative research design
LO4 Apply appropriate forms of data presentation and analysis in qualitative data
LO 5 Write a report using interpretive phenomenological analysis from a given transcript
Students are required to conduct a small-scale research to understand a Social psychology related issue. This coursework mainly assesses the students' knowledge and understanding of qualitative data analysis methods.
Because qualitative data collection is time consuming, you only need to conduct one interview. Ethical approval from ICBT ethics committee is required. Further, along with the research provide your participant consent form as well.
You are to choose the following methods for your report:
1. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis
Your report must have the following sections, in this order.
Title Page (APA)
Abstract (APA 7th)
Brief summary of your mini research project including a paragraph that comprises the abstract should include a description of the intent and conduct (including participants and method) of your project, the results you obtained, and the project's implications or applications.
Introduction: (approx. 500 words)
Give a brief introduction to the social psychology topic you are studying. Give at least 5 published sources to support the topic being studied. Include the aim of the study as well. Outline arguments for the use of qualitative methods in general. Refer here not to lecture notes but to at least five published sources/ articles. The introduction should focus to the aims of the research
Methodology (approx. 200 words)
Design- Specify the type of research you carried out.
Materials-In this section you should provide details of the raw data that were analysed, i.e. this will include the interview schedule, and possibly how the schedule was developed. Information regarding accessing the interviewee and how you obtained informed consent should be stated.
Participant- Give a description of your participant, how you got through to him/her, age, sex etc.
Procedure- In this section you should describe how the interview was set up, where it took place and how the data was analysed each of the transcripts, i.e. how coding was done, how themes emerged and this should apply to your data, rather than a general guide to analysis.
Method of Analysis- This will outline how IPA was conducted
Results (approx. 400 words - excluding data extracts)
Present each theme for your analysis, and provide illustrative extracts for each theme. Refer to lecture notes and the examples of published papers given for the format in which results should be laid out. A short table of themes might be included.
Discussion (approx. 400 words)
Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of using your chosen method in regard to this specific analysis and compare its use to the same method you used for comparison in the introduction. Again, this is not what you would normally include in a report, but the purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your methodological understanding. nFinally, discuss any implications of your findings and suggest directions for further research and give a conclusion to your research.
Conclusion (approx. 50 words)- In this section, summarise the conclusions you have drawn from the transcripts, bearing in mind the research aims.
References-Provide a full reference list, in APA 7th edition format, that matches the sources cited in the body of your report.
