Essay : Describing Globalization
Context: This year, we have discussed the idea of globalization indirectly through studying many different ways that the concept affects cultures all around the world. Some readings have focused primarily on one or two people's experiences, while other readings have incorporated more data. We have seen discussions of social, economic, and environmental factors, all indirectly naming globalization as having influence in one way or another. Traditionally, though, "globalization" is a business term, meaning:
The worldwide movement toward economic, financial, trade, and communications integration. Globalization implies the opening of local and
nationalistic perspectives to a broader outlook of an interconnected and interdependent world with free transfer of capital, goods, and services across national frontiers. However, it does not include unhindered movement of labor and, as suggested by some economists, may hurt smaller or fragile economies if applied indiscriminately. (The Business Dictionary).
As direct as the above definition may be, we know from the works read this past year that globalization is much more complex. Globalization can be witnessed and felt by many different locations, cultures, and events. What I'm curious to know is how globalization affects you.
