Assessment Instructions -
Aims - The aim of this assessment is to test your ability to interpret a research paper and present its results to a lay reader.
Learning Outcomes - This assessment tests learning outcome 3; To interpret and present data related to nutritional aspects of development.
Instructions - Adipose tissue is considered a key target of developmental programming and derangements in its early development may predispose to neonatal morbidity and adverse metabolic health. The ontogeny of fetal adipose tissue development is similar in humans and sheep, and hence a sheep model has been used to explore the relationship between maternal undernutrition and fetal adipose tissue development. In the resulting research paper (Journal of Molecular Endocrinology (2015) 54, 263-275), the experimental design and derivation of the tissue samples at two stages of pregnancy is described and key elements of the maternal and fetal phenotype are presented (Table 1). Genes involved in adipose tissue development were measured (Table 2, Figure 2, 3) and the type of fat cell quantified (Table 3). This allowed the researchers to make some important observations about when fetal adipose tissue development is sensitive to maternal nutrition and whether changes in specific molecular markers explain the lean phenotype observed in late pregnancy.
Your task is to read the paper which you can download as a pdf file from the link above) and extract the relevant information to produce an infographic (portrait or landscape) that can be understood by an intelligent member of the lay public. This should include some background information, key elements of the study design and outcomes and take-home messages. The paper contains 5 tables and 4 figures but the key tables and figures that you need to pay most attention to are indicated above and innovative ways of presenting the main aspects will score highly.
Format - This assessment should be presented as an infographic (portrait or landscape) that can be understood by an intelligent member of the lay public.
