Secure and Private Data Sharing for Interoperating Healthcare IoT Devices

An increasing number of IoT devices are now being used. In fact, It is estimated that by 2025, there will be 22 billion active IoT devices deployed around the world. One of the domains that has been quite welcoming in the adoption of IoT is healthcare where a range of different devices are already available in the market. IoT devices rely on data collection for their value-added services. For instance, user's activity details and nutrition information are commonly retrieved, stored, and processed. There are two main challenges of concern here:

Privacy against provider: the user has to trust the service provider on the privacy of their data.

Interoperation of different IoT devices: given that each provider stores data separately and as per its own revenue requirements, the interoperation of devices is not possible (E.g., consider Apple Health, FitBit, and Samsung Health). This limitation is also further reinforced by marketing and financial benefits of binding a user to an ecosystem of the solution provided by a single provider.

In this project, we will leverage recent advancements in cryptography and blockchain technology to propose a user-centric access control solution to enable different devices developed by different manufacturers to interoperate in a secure and privacy-preserving manner. A student taking this project is expected to have a strong programming background as well as an understanding of fundamental cybersecurity concepts. The student is also expected to have a passion for learning and studying about blockchain technology and its implementation on their own as part of this project.
