Upon realizing that a breach of security had a curd, part of the lab's network was shut down for three days, fearing that it was related to a terrorist attack. It was later learned that the team had merely wanted to download music and films and was using the lab servers as a location to store the copyrighted loot. He had developed a software program to enable him to download the copyrighted materials and named it Deathserv. He may not have been caught as quickly if he had not told friends about his scheme, and it was the increased traffic on the server by him and his friends that alerted authorities. The investigation required the use of forensic science to track the hackers back to the UK, but the team received a light sentence, in part due to his age. The judge, Andrew Goymer at London's Southwark Crown Court, sentenced McElroy to 200 hours of community service after he plead guilty to unauthorized modifications to the contents of a computer. The US Department of Energy had sought 21,000 pounds in compensation due to the seriousness of the offense and to recover damages due to the network destruction investigation.
