Imagine you are an International Business Training Consultant who has been approached by a large furniture manufacturer from Canada to help train a small group of its managers who are to open YOUR CHOICE stores abroad (pick the industry that interests you most - F&B, furniture, clothes, etc.). These managers will be relocated for 2 years and know very little about the country selected. What things would you advise the managers to know before leaving, and what issues do you want them to be aware of prior to their arriving in this new country?
What You Need to Do
You will form your own Major Group of 5-6 people. I suggest that two regular teams merge to form one Major Team, but that is up to you. If you have not joined a group by Week 6 at 11:59 pm, you will automatically be enrolled into one.
As a team, you will decide on the country and the specific industry that your group will research for this project.
Research the following about your chosen country:
- A brief overview of the history, politics, and law
- Current political events
- Current economic state
- General cultural values as viewed through the Hofstede Framework, as well as perception of time and view of work. (See Chapter 2)
- Trade barriers (Tariff and Non-Tariff barriers specifically in the furniture industry) and key International Regional Trade Arrangements (e.g. member of an FTA?)
- Exchange rates and cost of living
- Personal communication (see Chapter 2) and other practical suggestions as to things we should know about living and working culture in this country (e.g. safety, "how-to-do-business" suggestions, etc.).
Plan to approach your country research; in other words, each of you will be responsible for which aspect? e.g. country overview, economy, politics, trade, etc.
