Assignment Task
A Hypothetical Business Expansion Scenario Based on a Real-World Problem
The German and US pharmaceutical companies, BioNTech and Pfizer, announced on 9 November that they have developed a promising COVID-19 vaccine which is in advanced stages of testing awaiting emergency approval by the FDA, the US drug regulator.
Because of the huge potential demand for this vaccine and the special requirements for transporting the vaccine, it is very likely that additional manufacturing capacity is needed outside the US and Belgium, the only two countries where the vaccine is being produced. The potential countries considered are the UK and India. One of these countries needs to be selected and an appropriate entry mode needs to be recommended for the selected country.
Write a business report assessing the international expansion opportunities in these two countries using appropriate models (Porter's Diamond, Regional Economic Integration and Entry Mode). Additionally, discuss how the company could use John Dunning's Eclectic Paradigm to show whether FDI is justified in the chosen country. The report will require additional research and should provide clear recommendations regarding the selected country and entry mode, supported by analysis.
Structure of the report: The structure of the report should include a table of contents (with page numbers); a brief introduction which explains the focus of the case study; a main report analysing the company's problems and actions using applicable theories taught in the module and conclusions and recommendations which are clearly based on the previous analysis; an alphabetical list of references cited in the main text; and appendices.
