Internal Promotion Systems and Succession Planning
The issue for this discussion is to examine internal candidates for certain key positions and to explore the development of a succession planning program. Using the scenario from previous assignments, imagine that you are a human services leader that needs to make a PowerPoint presentation to a company leadership committee about the plans for the succession planning program. You need to keep your slide deck short and concise, between 5-7 well-planned slides.
For this discussion, refer to the scenario from the Unit 3 assignment:
- While some traditional organizations have been closing operations in the United States, there are a number of organizations (Amazon, Tesla, Apple, Google, Foxconn, and so forth) that are making significant investments in major new operations. A major concern for these organizations is the ability to recruit and attract employees with the requisite skills needed to fill what are often highly skilled jobs. Assume that you have been brought in to consult with one of these growing organizations as it prepares to open a new facility. The new facility will be a multi-purpose regional office with 1500 employees in a variety of disciplines. The new employees will be hired for all positions, ranging from a regional VP and senior staff functions, to the customer service team, and the distribution/warehouse team with 400 employees. The new facility will be similar to eight existing facilities in other regions.
There are currently eight facilities similar to the facility about to be opened. As a starting point, it is safe to assume that there are employees in the eight facilities who are qualified to move into key positions in the new facility. For this discussion, focus on the distribution/warehouse employees. The typical facility has the following leadership team:
- Distribution center manager.
- Two assistant managers.
- Four shift managers.
- Fifteen department supervisors.
- Fifteen assistant department supervisors.
Based on the above and research from at least two peer-reviewed articles, create a 5-7 slide PowerPoint with speaker notes to post in the discussion. Assume that it could be used to give a presentation to the corporate management team to propose an internal promotion system and succession plan. Note: You are NOT expected or required to record a presentation, but post the slides with your outline and any brief speaker notes that you may want to include. There are fewer readings this week so that you have time to work on this discussion and you can give at least one other person feedback on his or her slides. Imagine if you were in a meeting and someone presented these slides? What would be your impression? What would you do differently after looking at someone else's slides?
Include the following in your bullet points on the slides and provide clear explanation in the speaker notes section of the presentation:
- Major reasons to implement an aggressive internal promotion system.
- Specific risks to implementing this internal promotion system.
- Steps that would need to be taken to implement this internal promotion system:
- How would the system be advertised or would it be handled in some other way (such as word of mouth).
- How would applicants apply?
- How would their work with the company be reviewed and by whom?
- How would you select applicants to interview and how would the interviews be conducted (in person, online or by a third party)?
- How would applicants be notified of the result of their applications?
- A succession plan would logically be linked to developing a career path for employees as part of their annual performance reviews. Assume that an employee is promoted to assistant department supervisor-what would be involved in a career path that would lead that employee to eventually being qualified to be a distribution center manager? How would a succession plan help these internal promotions work effectively? What might be included in this plan? You do not need to develop a plan, just make some recommendations (for example, shift manager level and above would require a four-year degree) and justify with your rationales
