Internal Memorandum Assignment

Provides a succinct summary and analysis of a given topic (e.g. the effectiveness of a current marketing strategy or the career opportunities of a specific major) to be delivered to a superior (e.g. team leader of a marketing team or the Director of Career Services). Similar to the Unsolicited Recommendation, the Internal Memorandum requires an argument that appeals primarily through logic, relying on facts, statistics, and reputable sources to support claims. The Internal Memorandum was requested by the superior, which means certain information is expected and the organization directly. Your goal then is to compose a brief, informative document that includes findings only relevant to your superior and organized in a way that allows quick reading. 

Rubric

  • Appropriate, reputable resources that convincingly satisfy the research objective. The student effectively synthesizes resources to demonstrate their significance to the subject. All resources are relevant to the subject and the audience's expectations.
  • Choosing clear, specific, and positive words help stimulate the desired action. Complex ideas are unpacked. Vague words and generalizations are avoided. The tone is neutral and respectful.
  • presents a convincing argument that logically develops throughout the paper. The student utilizes transitions to connect ideas. The student uses direct/indirect organization appropriately and does not delay and/or misplace significant information.
  • The design is consistent with genre conventions. The student uses clear, parallel headings to organize and clarify content in a way that encourages scanning.
  • Little to no grammatical and stylistic mistakes. The student emphasizes the active voice and specific action verbs and minimizes using "It is/There is" introduction statements, verbs as nouns, and vague pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs.
