Marriage: Reasons, Types, and Change 1212 unread replies.1212 replies.
It is likely that most of you are already married, divorced, or will marry in the future. The purpose of this activity is to encourage you to share your thoughts and experiences on marriage. If you are considering marriage then you will probably find the discussion useful and learn from those who are or have been married. In fact, some of you may be inclined to question why people marry at all. If you are married then now might be a good time to reflect on the quality of your marriage so far, and maybe share some pointers with those considering this traditional social institution. If you are divorced and/or remarried, then hopefully you are willing to comment on why you were enthusiastic about entering the institution of marriage for a second time. In the meantime, let's put our heads and hearts together and try to answer some of these important questions listed below.
You are encouraged to intermingle and merge the discussion questions if appropriate. Post a 100 word reaction to the questions and thoughtfully draw on your own insights and experiences while at the same time incorporating what you have learned in readings and content contained in the module.
Consider the following for your discussion activity. Using essay format, post your initial response(s) to the associated discussion forum.
What do you consider the three best reasons people get married? Are there some men and women who would be better off if they didn't get married? What traits or characteristics would help you identify whom not to marry? Is there such a thing as a "soul mate"? Which type of marriage do you think is most suitable to be more long-lasting: companionate, institutionalized or individualized? Which was more meaningful? Why? Considering the high rates of infidelity, are expectations of permanence and of sexual exclusivity still important in American society? Do you agree more with the family change or the family decline perspective when it comes to marriage? Why?
Post your initial response(s) in the discussion no later than Day 4 of the module's week. No later than Day 6 or 7, return to the discussion forum and read your classmates' responses and post meaningful comments to a minimum of three of your classmates. There are no extensions beyond Day 7; no exceptions. Late posts will not increase your score.
