Question

You are the Charge Nurse on the overnight shift of an intermediate care/medical surgical overflow unit. There has been an explosion somewhere in the basement that has caused structural damage, and you have been told you must evacuate very quickly. You are on the second floor and must use the stairs; the elevators are locked down. You have 30-45 minutes to get the patients to the entrance. There are security and maintenance staff to assist in the stairwell. It is estimated that it will take about 4 hours to transport all the patients to other healthcare facilities. Your complement of staff includes : 2 other RNs and a nurses' aide. There is no other direct-care help available.
