This was an interesting podcast to listen to and learn from. This podcast should me things in a new light, a different view and prospective. I learned new terms, new technology and new research that is being looked at. I never know nor have I heard the term situational awareness until now I had no clue what this was. Situational awareness is being an aware of what is happening around you in terms of where you are. Knowing whether there is a threat to you, your health and your safety. When hearing the speaker say a checklist that companies and managers want you to go through, but it is not realistic in an emergency. I learned the best way to prepare and stay prepared for rare but real and realistic situations. I learned at work the best practice and way to stay prepared for rare and real emergencies or situations at work is to go over the procedures, practices, simulations and drills. Drills makes me think of when you are in elementary school you have fire drills that you do to keep your mind going and everything is fresh especially unscheduled drills. This is also an opportunity to grow and learn.
Work can always be stressful and sadly affects our body negatively, unfortunately most managers do not take that into consideration. Managers do not realize how the stress they place their employees under truly affects their health. Do they not want aware and alert employees. When you are stressed, we are going through the motions, or as they said you are in auto pilot. This can occur from the pressure we are under from our management team.
To be a good leader you need to have compassion, the people you are leading are humans with real lives and real feelings. I recall one day I was going to work but received a call saying my child was sick and I had to come get them, I called and informed my manager I would not be in, and her response was " this is still a business". In that moment she did not have good leadership skills. " Good leaders have to have passion for people". That is such an amazing and true statement. If you are not passionate about people and guidance or helping them as a whole, you will not be a good successful leader.
