Question
The internal and external problems that Rome faced were interconnected and influenced each other in various ways. The economic challenges within the empire, such as inflation and high taxes, were often exacerbated by external factors like the cost of maintaining a large military and defending its borders. The need to fund the army and deal with external threats put a strain on the empire's finances, leading to economic instability. Weak leadership, political infighting, and corruption within the empire made it more vulnerable to external invasions. The internal power struggles and instability weakened the empire's ability to defend itself effectively, making it an easier target for barbarian invasions. The empire's overexpansion led to stretched resources and a strain on the military. As the empire grew larger, it became increasingly difficult to maintain control over distant territories, which weakened the army's effectiveness. This internal decline in the Roman army made it more susceptible to external threats from invading barbarian tribes. Reference: Books, C. (2019). Western Civilization: A Concise History (Vol. 1).
