You are the HR Manager for the Toronto Police. You are responsible for recruitment and selection of new police officers and administrative staff members. You have a reasonable budget for recruitment and selection but still face constraints as you must effectively use those funds to fill many vacancies each year because of high turnover. As such, you must be careful to select efficient and effective assessments methods to choose the best candidate for each vacancy.

The Chief of Police has noticed that candidate recently hired are not performing well and has asked you, as the HR Manager, to examine the selection process and provide recommendations to improve hiring practices.

Select one (1) of the three (3) jobs below. For that job, describe the selection process you would recommend for each job using the 8-step selection process IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Be sure to speak about EACH of the steps to explain what you would include OR NOT include (e.g. applicant screening, assessment/selection tests, contingent assessments, realistic job previews, interviewing and reference/background checks). Be sure to include sufficient detail to explain your rationale for each job.

  1. Administrative Assistant: The assistant is responsible for receiving calls from the public, booking appointments, typing memos and reports for the Chief and general office organization such as filing.
  2. Police Officer: A Police Office is responsible for interacting with the public to enforce the law. It is important that Police Officers are able to maintain calm in stressful situations, interact appropriately with members of the public, have a level of physical fitness to pursue (run after) criminals, problem-solving and conflict management to deal with situations and take notes/write reports to summarize criminal incidents.
  3. Chief Administrative Office: The Chief Administrative Office is the most senior office manager and is responsible for overseeing the HR, Finance and other administrative functions within the Police District. The Chief Administrative Office requires strategic decision making, excellent leadership/management skills, financial knowledge to manage budgets, etc.
