It's important to set out the core objective or intent of your qualitative research from the outset. A single sentence purpose statement should define a roadmap for the overall study. The use of qualitative words such as 'discover', 'understand' and 'explore' help to set the tone of the question and demonstrate your desire to delve deeper.
Qualitative research explores personal experiences, opinions, understanding, feelings and meaning. Qualitative research is NOT intended to identify prevalence rates or other numeric values.
Below are three questions. Remember, a qualitative research question (unlike individual interview questions), is the large, overarching question that will guide the project. Please evaluate the questions below; if necessary, please revise the questions to be good qualitative research questions, and provide a rationale for why your revision(s) was necessary. As you evaluate the question, think about what the question is trying to explore and if that aligns with qualitative research. Also think about if the question is truly an overarching qualitative research question, or merely one individual interview/focus group question that would make up one small piece of a larger qualitative research study.

2. What is the meaning of life?
3. How much time do you spend watching streaming television stations?
