Pat, the CEO of a small health services company, has hired you to help with HR so she can focus on other areas of her business. Prior to the pandemic, they had 40 employees - most who had been with the business for decades. HR systems and practices had always been very informal, managed directly by Pat. This had always worked for them and their close-knit team and family-like culture.

The informality isn't working as well now. It is October 2021, and the effects of the pandemic are still being felt by the world. This company has been greatly affected by the pandemic economy and has experienced amazing growth. In response to the huge customer demand, they now have 125 employees. During the lockdown, all of these employees worked remotely and collaborated by Zoom and group conference calls. All hiring was done quickly and remotely. There was no time for formal orientation and performance management was limited. Now that things are starting to look up, Pat is starting to think about bringing everyone back to the office to improve collaboration and allow her to know what everyone is doing.

Turnover in entry level jobs (low skill, customer facing) has increased

Approx. 20 of the most skilled employees are preparing to retire within the next three years.

- Clients are served in their homes - primarily by lower-skilled workers. Highly skilled workers work mostly in the office coordinating all fieldwork and business development while also occasionally making home visits for consultation or assessments.

- Some clients are satisfied, others are not - coordination of care is lacking and performance of workers varies

- It is an intensely competitive job market; skilled and credentialed healthcare workers are in great demand and difficult to find. Candidates are very demanding. Competitors are trying to poach your best employees.

Some employees are complaining that they are 'carrying' other employees who aren't working as hard - having to pick up the slack while other employees are 'slacking.'

Other employees are complaining that they don't have a consistent work schedule throughout the week

Analyze the case.

Identify issues related to organizational change brought up in the case.

Draft a brief report for Pat outlining initial steps, barriers to change to be concerned about and other recommendations you would make based on the readings.
