Paleoindian assemblages from kill sites are dominated by the big game, primarily mammoths during the Clovis period and bison at all later sites. This does not imply that large game exploitation was unimportant to Paleoindian subsistence. Foragers in alluvial settings exploited a more equitable mixture of the fauna of all different body sizes. In foothill/mountain settings, the use of large games was pretty low. Evidence of increased exploitation of smaller games through time is most definitively seen in foothill/mountain settings during the Paleoindian period. There is limited evidence for subsistence change over time in plains/rolling hills or alluvial valleys. The differences likely relate to environmental conditions that affected local occupation by large game.
