On many campuses across the country, athletes' academic studies are forced to take a backseat to their athletic performance, as athletes often must engage in two rigorous practice or training sessions per day, the first in the early morning and the second in the afternoon or evening (known in sports jargon as "two-a-days"). College athletes are often required to schedule their classes around their rigid sports training, which may interfere with a junior's or senior's ability to register for upper-level courses to complete the requirements to earn a Bachelor's degree in their major. Former Northwestern University quarterback Kain Colter reported that his advisers encouraged him to take easier classes that were more conducive to his hectic football schedule during his college career, which ultimately derailed his long-term goal of becoming a medical doctor.
