Before there was internet there were people that would have to do all the information gathering. This meant that it would take more time for an individual to gather information and then analyze it".

There are several different types of marketing information. Considering time and cost constraints, researchers must choose carefully among these to get the best results. There is primary (consumers) and secondary (internal and external) data collection. This collection of data includes sampling from both probability and non-probability perspectives.

Secondary research: collecting information which has already been gathered for another purpose

Primary research: collecting new information to meet specific needs

Qualitative: Gathering descriptive information, usually representing verbal or narrative data through open-ended interviews or focus groups.

Quantitative: Gathering numerical information that can be analyzed statistically through surveys.
