Assignment Outcomes
This assignment requires multiple outputs to be created to exhibit your understanding of business intelligence/data analysis through an example ‘real world' question that is comparable to what you may be asked of you as you become an IT professional. You will do the assignment as a team but will receive individual marks based on your contribution to the assignment.
Key outcomes to be delivered are: Data Modelling of the provided dataset, Extract Transform Load (ETL) processing undertaken to make the data usable, Output of your analysis, a Report summarising your findings and recommendations, and a presentation to the class of your work. The presentation is expected to concentrate more on your findings/recommendations as if it were a situation where you are presenting the response to the head sales executive's question.
Assignment Question
The head Sales Executive of ‘BIA Inc' comes to you as the lead Business/Data Analyst and asks you to help with a problem they have.
"I've heard that people aren't motivated at the moment and sales aren't as good as we had hoped. To try and provide incentives for staff, I want to provide an award (and probably associated cash prize) to my best performer for sales from this Office, I need you to tell me who that is?"
"As part of your response I want you to provide the justification as to why the particular sales officer was selected because we need governance over things like this.
.... By the way, we don't currently have any of this information stored centrally in a database thingy, but I have gotten the Office Business Manager to collate a summary of the recent sales into a rough excel file that can be used as a starting basis. As part of the processes of getting me an answer on my best salesperson, can you also create a database as part of the preparation of the answer. We will then use that as the base of further reporting into the future. We haven't ever had people with your skills working with us before so I expect there will be lots of questions that will come up as we utilise your expertise."
You have been given hints regarding the assignment and its expected deliverables in lectures and or Weekly Learning Activities. You will be judged on your technical ability in producing analytics as well as your ability to interpret them and provide the clients with information and knowledge that may be useful for them.
Assignment Deliverables
Using the data file provided in Excel and associated notes about the data, (Assignment 1 - data.xlsx) you are required to complete the following elements as part of the assignment.
• Your team report should have a group assessment sheet followed by a title page that provides the team identification and peer review.
• Data Model
o Using the information made available to you and your understanding of concepts around data mart design in the labs, design a "Sales" DataMart to store the information in a format that will allow the information to be expanded and one that would enable analysis to occur.
• ETL: Data Load Process undertaken
o Provide an overview of the ETL/ELT process completed and what (if any) Quality Assurance processes you undertook as part of this.
o Ensure you record any assumptions you have made as part of this component and your reasoning behind the assumption.
• Output of Analysis (including SQL used)
o Once the data loaded and is available and ready for use, you need to create a set of SQL scripts to be used to generate the results to the business question provided to you from the Head Sales Executive
o Provide a snapshot of the raw results of your analysis that provides the basis of your recommendations
o Provide your recommendations based on your analysis - this could include any business recommendations and presentations that might be helpful in explaining your analysis and results to a business manager. You should always think of the business as well as the technical side of analysis, ie you produce an analysis of data, but how are the results interpreted? Are they beneficial or useful to the business? The following hints will help your team achieve the most marks for this section:
? (Hint: It might be nice to present graphs of the top salespersons)
? (Hint: What criteria will you use to determine the best performer?)
• It might be good to provide the best sales performer based on different criteria. For example, how do you decide the criteria used to determine the best sales performer??? By total dollars returned to the business or by the total number of sales made?.
o Ensure you record any assumptions you have made as part of this analysis component and your reasoning behind the assumption.
• Executive Summary in response to business question.
o Provide a short Executive brief/summary that presents a clear concise response back to the Sales Executive's question about possible incentives to the best salesperson. This should clearly detail the recommendation and any key assumptions/restrictions the executive need to be aware of.
• Team Presentation
o A YouTube team presentation will be required indicating recommendations to management. Details of the presentation will be explained by week 4 but you should anticipate that it will be a YouTube presentation. Your team's presentation should be delivered as if you were summoned to the board room with the Head Sales Executive to provide a formal response to his questions.
Assignment Progress Requirements:
• Each team is to have a weekly meeting, starting in week 2. Team documentation includes weekly action items resulting from the team meeting. These should be in a document with an entry for each week of work. Each week's entry should show the allocation of work/tasks to each team member and a summary of the team member's weekly progress on their allocated tasks, i.e. the result (finished/continuing/needs to be redone, etc) and the quality of the work/tasks assigned in a comment. This document will be attached to the team's assignment report. It may be used as a basis for an individual team member‘s assignment mark if the lecturer is not satisfied with the peer review. A template is in the Blackboard assessments folder.
• Each team is to have a file repository that keeps team member's work-in-progress. This can be anywhere the team chooses and it also chooses when work-in-progress is to be available before the weekly team meeting. The choice of platform is up to the team (google docs, one drive, etc) but it should be able to be produced when requested by a tutor or lecturer.
• A peer review will be the primary means of allocating a contribution percentage of the team assignment mark to get an individual team members mark. If there is a dispute regarding the peer review the lecturer will arbitrate and award the individual mark based the team documentation of action items and allocation of work as described below.
• Please make sure that you engage with your team members and be proactive in the assignment and progression of work through weekly communication - you establish with your team the best methods for communication, progression and storage of work-in-progress. You are all in a team of at least 4 people (allowing for the potential risk of one student withdrawal) and you have enough time and skills in your teams to complete the work to a high standard. If there are any problems within your team, please contact me urgently so we can try and mitigate them.
• I will not know who does what in your team, or the quality of the week-by-week submissions of tasks, nor do I know which team members lead, perform work, be proactive, respond on time, submit work regularly, consistently submit quality work, always need checking, are always late, do not make suggestions, etc. You, and the members of your team, are the ones who know that for your team. For that reason, the initial individual assignment of marks is by peer review.
• The peer evaluation will be analogous to handing $100 to the team and getting it to split the money amongst its members according to individual contribution (any change goes to the lecturer ;-)
• As an example, if there are 4 people in the team and everyone is roughly consistent in contributions to the final submission, then everyone gets $25. Remember that a peer review is subjective and also that some people do better or finish quicker in some tasks than others, but that generally should even out in other tasks.
• As indicated in the Course Outline, if there is disagreement regarding the peer evaluation, the whole team will be assessed, and individual marks arbitrated by the lecturer. This will involve submission of individual diaries of team members, followed by a concurrent zoom meeting between the team and the lecturer to arbitrate individual marks.
• You are to fill in a team peer review on the title page (the first page following group assignment cover sheet) of your assignment. It should simply list each member and contribution as a % (the total of all member percentages should add up to 100%). If there is a disagreement, or a low contribution, the team should briefly indicate a reason.
