For students interested in an educational leadership dissertation then a review of effective or ineffective leadership in a particular context is popular. Popular approaches include:
- Transformational Leadership within a particular context
- Moral leadership in areas of social deprivation
- The value of ethical leadership within educational contexts
- An evaluation of a transactional leadership style through a period of change
- Effective change management
Framework
Selection of particular research context
Identify a topic that relates to your named route e. g MA Education (Leadership and Management). Use wider reading to help you to gain a fuller understanding of a topic that could be investigated. There is a list of past topics in the module on Brightspace which might give your ideas.
One possible approach
1. Start with introduction to the assignment what it is about and what it will cover.
2. Introduce the topic of your research and discuss why it is significant. Outline your research questions
3. Introduce epistemology and discuss how it relates to your research questions
4. You then need to introduce positivism and interpretism as 2 contrasting approaches to research using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Discuss what these approaches mean for your research.
5. Introduce 2 contrasting methodologies (one quantitative and one qualitative eg survey approach compared to case study) that could be applied to your topic and argue for one
6. Introduce a couple of contrasting sampling strategies and argue for a sampling strategy which fits with your chosen methodology
7. Discuss the methods that could be used and argue which would be most appropriate and how they fit with your research questions
8. Discuss the quality of the study relating back to sample and methods
9. Conclusion should focus on summarising the key messages from discussion and considering So What? and What Next? questions.
