Question

A girl was born with a birth weight of 7 lb. 1 oz. From the first day, the infant was fed reconstituted evaporated milk to supplement breast-feeding, which ended completely by the eighth day. From the fourteenth day, the baby was fed on a diet of half-cream dried milk with added cane sugar. She was admitted to the Hospital for Children at 17 days old because of lethargy and failure to thrive, and with projectile vomiting after feeds for the previous four days. The initial diagnosis was pyloric stenosis (i.e., narrowing of the valve between the stomach and small intestine).
