Assignment - Business System Analysis

Tasks

Choose an Information system that you will analyse (e.g. travel booking system, banking system, Insurance company system, etc). For full marks it should not be a generic system but a system for a specific company. You may need to interview or observe someone working on the system in this company. For example if you know someone working at a travel agency you may ask for a chance to observe their work and answer your questions about this system.

If you have difficulty deciding on the business information system, please consult your tutor. Write a report describing the chosen system, addressing the following issues:

Question 1. Describe at least three groups of users of this system including what kind of data they enter into the system or what kind of information they extract from the system and whether they rely on other people's data to get information. Give examples of decision making supported by the system for each group of users. If possible illustrate your story with screenshots of the user interface.

Question 2. Referring to Porter's four generic competitive strategies, identify the competitive strategy of the business you are analysing and Justify your decision. Make sure you clearly specify the industry or industry segment in which this business operates.

Question 3. Which of the activities In Porter's value chain is best supported by this system? Explain your aflutter.

Question 4. Using Porter's five forces model, describe how they affect the business you are analysing (i.e. explain whether each force is weak medium or strong and justify your answer).

Question 5. Provide two detailed examples of decision-making (on two different levels of management). Describe how the decision-making process Is supported by the information system. Explain which level of management Is making the decision and illustrate shat Information this decision is based on.
