Scenario
You work in the Human Resources Department of ArtTech, a mid-sized animation company that had been planning amalgamation with Tobin EduGames, a small but successful video game development company. It was assumed that the deal would go through, and a combined office space was planned. Your staff had been told they'd be moving to a new building with newly furnished, spacious offices, and everyone was working towards packing and moving in another month.
However, the planned amalgamation deal fell through at the last minute, and the move has been cancelled. Fortunately, your company was able to extend the lease on its current offices, so all your employees can simply stay where they are. You anticipate much disappointment since not only is the current space dated and crowded, but the amalgamation and move were promoted as an exciting new venture that everyone was looking forward to.
Task
Using the indirect structure and strategies to soften bad news (as discussed in the posted materials and in your textbook), write a memo to all staff letting them know that the company will not be merging with Tobin EduGames and will not be moving to new offices. You also want to acknowledge the hard work that everyone has done in planning and preparing for the move, both the special Re-Organization Committee, which was planning the administrative structure for the new combined company, and individual staff members who spent time sorting office materials ready for packing.
Hints
- Include only information that's relevant to audience (all company staff) and the situation.
What do have to say to achieve the purpose (see the Task above) while minimizing disappointment and softening the bad news.
- Provide an explanation that the audience will consider reasonable while offering an alternative (or a consolation) to help ease the likely disappointment. Feel free to make up details here.
Instructions
- Follow the indirect structure for bad news messaage
- Make up any necessary details (e.g., the sender's name and title, etc.).
