In the Philadelphia area the three largest health problems are heart disease, cancer, and drug overdoses. When considering drug overdoses opioids are the largest contributor to those deaths. In looking at the demographic data of the city it is understandable that these are the issues that would be expected. The poverty level in the city is extremely high making the drug crisis fit within the demographics. Addressing that problem strictly from a healthcare perspective would mean creating programs for recovery and continued support for those who seek help. The greater issue would be combating the problem from other perspectives that are secondarily related to drug problem, poverty. Qualitative methods focusing on the social aspects of these problem would lead you to find that HIV is the fourth leading contributor to death, something that goes hand in hand with the abuse of drugs. Understanding that these issues are closely connected and contribute to each other addressing the need for healthcare among those who are living in poverty would need to be addressed. Quantitative data in populations where people are homeless and poor does not often contribute enough or accurate data alone to indicate the enormity of a problem or allow enough evidence of the root cause aside from the data related to cause of death.
