An inexpensive depth gauge used by scuba divers consists of a small diameter tube wrapped around the rim of a dial. An opening or port at one end allows water to enter when submerged. This traps air in the tube so that the location of the air-water boundary indicates the depth. The image at left below shows the tube in air and at right in water.
If the temperature at the surface can be taken as 65 degrees F and at 250ft, 35 degrees F, determine where to mark depths of 10, 20, 30, 60, 100, 150, and 200 ft. Indicate the location of the marking on the dial for each depth in degrees where the port is 0 degrees and the plug at the other end is 350 degrees.
Assume air can be treated as an ideal gas for the calculations. We also assume the temperature will vary linearly with depth. As the depth gauge is submerged at the surface, it will close off the port and trap air in the tube. The mass or number of moles of air will be constant, so that values calculated at the surface and any depth can be equated. Location of the mark can be found from ( V0 / Vsurface)(350 degrees).
