THESIS/ARGUMENT: In a position paper, your thesis will indicate agreement or disagreement with the argument of your primary text. page 22 from a source of happiness

  1. Ground/Reason #1: Provide one sentence that explains why your argument is true. This is a fact-based statement. (Remember: your thesis is debatable/opinion, but your grounds will not be because they will serve as proof for your thesis.) For example, Women in polygamous marriages have reported a higher rate of depression than those not in polygamous marriages. OR: Apologizing Earnestly helps to mend breaches in relationships. (These are statements that reflect fact language, which will be used in your research. If you can prove that your ground is fact via research, then you likely have sound ground.)
  2. Ground/Reason #2

  3. Ground/ Reason #3

IMPORTANT NOTE: This outline precedes your research. This is why I do not require supporting quotes. Once this outline is approved by me, you will use it as a road map for your research in order to find supporting quotes you can appropriately use in your paper.

Essay drafting instructions: Remember that your paper will be organized and developed according to this outline.  The paper must include a full but short introduction and conclusion, and you must develop all body paragraphs per this basic checklist:

Paragraph Development Checklist:

  • Topic sentence - the first sentence of the paragraph that conveys the ground being discussed. It will be worded as a fact.
  • Findings - research to prove that the ground is a fact (this is where you will gain experience with researching, quoting, paraphrasing, and citing).
  • Rationale - making the connections between the findings and how they satisfy the ground; in other words, the persuasive edge whereby you show that you are proving your point.  Without this component, your paper will read like a straight research paper and not a research-backed argument.
  • Connections - bringing everything full circle to your overall thesis.  When all is said and done, showing how all of the information provided helps to prove that your paper's argument is true.
