Donald J. Trump, a popular fixture on American television, flirted with the presidency for decades but only seriously sought the office after being publicly mocked by the political establishment at the 2011 White House Correspondent's Dinner, an event hosted by and for the journalists who cover the presidency. Although Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party outspent Donald Trump and the Republicans nearly 2 to 1 in campaign spending, Donald Trump went on to galvanize media coverage and shocked the world with his 2016 victory.

Whereas previous presidents spent much effort to cultivate relationships with the media in order to court public opinion, Trump instead criticized the media as untrustworthy and charged it with producing "fake news." This approach quickly led to critical coverage of the president across all but a few press outlets; media coverage of the president was almost entirely hostile in the last years of his presidency. The animosity was real.

And yet some inconvenient truths remain: Donald Trump's candidacy and presidency were both incredibly lucrative events for cable television, and Donald Trump's election was enabled by the intense focus on his candidacy and the thousands of hours of free prime-time coverage it eagerly handed his campaign.

So who elected Donald Trump in 2016: the American people, or the American media?
