We are the headquarters element for a 106-year-old, 50,000 employee strong company spread throughout the nation with members in every state. We are responsible for the strategy and execution of 35 programs at each location nationwide. One new program alone spends over $9M annually with a $44M project planned for the next three fiscal years.
We are a hierarchical company that has a stable cultural organizational profile (Bauer & Erdogan, 2017). There are very clear lines of authority and communication. Each department has a varying degree of autonomy based on the current people, current project, and past performance. The majority of promotions are from within the broader, nationwide company based on a combination of performance and time with the company. It is normal to be moved to a new location every few years or following a promotion, which supports that leader in their new responsibilities. Most employees promote regularly and transfer physical locations regularly. Employees that do not promote to a certain level in leadership are eventually removed from the company. By contrast, some key leaderships positions (less than 10%) towards the top of the hierarchy are brought in from outside the company and they can stay for much longer periods of time at a single location than regular employees which creates stability and continuity of knowledge. Due to the company size and mission, it will likely keep its stable cultural profile, but it does recognize the value and importance of innovation. The company has tried varies initiatives in the past few years to increase the ability of employees at every level to be able to communicate their ideas and suggestions to the very highest levels of the company.
