The incorrect amino acid sequence in a protein may lead to fatal consequences. Let's look at the inherited disease, sickle cell anemia. How does an incorrect amino acid sequence lead to this disease? People with two copies of the sickle cell gene have the disease, however people who carry only one copy of the gene do not have the disease but could possibly pass the gene on to their children. Several studies have been done to demonstrate how the effects of this mutation can be traced from the DNA level up to the level of the whole organism. How does the gene affect individuals, their cells, and proteins? What effects would happen at the DNA level? At the protein level? Cellular level? And the effects on the organism as a whole?
