Objective:
To create a professional development plan around one specific goal, incorporating the SMART principles and strategies learned in class
As Winston Churchill once said, "Failing to plan, is planning to fail". We have a much greater chance of seeing our dreams and goals materialize if we take the time to create a specific plan for success.
In this assignment, students will think of one goal that they would like to achieve. Following the strategies learned in class, students will complete a SWOT analysis to determine where their challenges and opportunities are, and create action steps to achieve their goal.
Course Learning Outcomes: 1, 2, 5, and 6 Essential Employability Outcomes 1, 6, 7, and 10
Details:
1) Create one precise sentence to describe your employment goal. Your goal should follow the SMART principles. Include:
- Position title,
- The type of business (eg. Event Company, Caterer, Venue, Hotel, Restaurant, etc.)
- The geographic area
- Time to reach this position (eg. be a "X" in five years; your choice on the time: 1 year, 3, 5, 20, etc.)
2) Provide your top 3 strengths, as they relate to your industry. Include a brief explanation as to why this is a strength. (Eg. Time Management; I hand in all school assignments on time) and explain how this is a benefit to your career path (Eg. This will allow me to prioritize and organize my work). Show how this is relevant to your career development and why it is an advantage in your industry
3) Provide your top 3 weaknesses or areas you would like to improve, as they relate to your industry.
(Be honest with yourself. If you are brave, ask others to be honest with you. Recognizing your weaknesses will allow you to work on improving them or, at the very least, know that they exist so you can adjust them when the situation calls for it.) Discuss how this affects your career direction
4) Provide 5 action plan items (with proposed deadlines) to improve your skills and/or attain your employment goal. These can include items that will improve your technical skills, soft skills, education credentials, professional designations, etc. Make sure they follow the SMART principles and should be listed in chronological order leading to your ultimate main goal
