A coin is placed near one edge of a book lying on a table, and that edge do the book is lifted until the coin now slips down the incline.

1. Draw a free body diagram for the coin with all forces acting on it. Your free body diagram must include a force of static friction acting up on the incline

2. Is the magnitude of the friction force equal to us for all angles less than theta c? Explain.

3. Show that the coefficient of static friction is given with us =tan theta c

 

4. Once the coin starts to slide down the incline, the angle can be adjusted to a new value of theta c prime < theta c such that the coin moves down the incline by constant speed. How does this observation enable you to get the coefficient of kinetic friction?
