In this module we examined the food habits of the British and Irish. It is fair to say that Americans often have an inaccurate view of British and Irish pubs. America has more of a bar scene than a pub scene. Particularly popular is the sports bar, where thousands of giant TV screens simultaneously broadcast billions of seemingly never-ending sports games.
This scene is very different from a traditional British or Irish Pub. British pubs are quiet, relaxing environments, and although there are pubs in America, they don't serve the same function as they do in the U.K.
The term 'pub' is short for public house. Public houses historically functioned as local meetings spots and served to strengthen community ties. It is therefore no surprise, that Brits and the Irish occupy pubs in the same way Americans occupy coffee shops. Brits will happily go to a pub during the day (without fear of judgment) to work, read, take meetings or simply enjoy a drink. In addition, most British and Irish pubs serve hot food.
Traditional British pub fare includes fish and chips, Shepherd's pie, cottage pie and Yorkshire pudding.
Imagine that you and your small group plan to open your very own 'authentic' British or Irish pub in West Haven, CT!
- Decide what food items you will include on your menu.
- Please include at least six food items and description next to each of the items.
- At least one should be an entrée and at least one should be a dessert. Don't forget that the Brits and the Irish have a slightly different interpretation of dessert!
- Please tell me why you chose EACH of these six foods and what type of client you think they will attract.
- Remember, you need to balance your effort to be authentic with the need to attract college kids as well as customers who may not eat meat.
- Explain the significance of the name of your English or Irish pub. In other words, explain the reason why they chose that particular name.
- Examples mentioned in the instructions should not be used, i.e Shepherd's Pie.
- Lastly, name your pub!
