Topic: TENSILE TESTING PRACTICAL

Details: Write it as a scientific analysis

TASK DESCRIPTION

ASSIGNMENT: HOUNSFIELD TENSOMETER TENSILE TESTING

Some of the most important mechanical properties of a material can be determined by means of a simple tensile test. This practical introduces tensile testing of metals.

Overview of practical

After instruction, you will test some metal tensile specimens (Steel, Aluminium and Brass) in your specific groups as arranged. The specimens are to be tested to failure in a Hounsfield Tensometer.

Testing of metals

Mechanical testing of metals is carried out on a Hounsfield Tensometer.

Test one sample of each material to failure. The results obtained from the Tensometer are output in the form of a load-extension graph plot via a computer at the end of the test. This graph and your physical measurement of the specimen pre and post test will aid in the analysis of your results. These graphs must be saved onto a USB drive and presented with your written report of your laboratory testing.

To convert your findings, use the following relationships:

Engineering Stress, σ = LOAD/AREA

Engineering Strain, ε = EXTENSION/ORIGINAL LENGTH

Yield Point = Load at which plastic deformation begins.

Ultimate tensile Load (UTL) = The maximum load attained

Young's Modulus = STRESS/STRAIN

Your results should be presented in the following table:

The Report Format:

Your report should be formally laid out in the following format in sub headings (minimum):

1. Introduction
2. Methodology
3. Results and Analysis
4. Conclusions

The report on this practical should contain a description of both equipment used and the detailed process of the testing experiment. The main part of the write-up should be the discussion of your results. Your report should not exceed 5 pages of text (+ graphs). Write it as a scientific analysis. Although the testing is completed in your groups, the write up of the experiment must be completed separately and must be YOUR OWN work. Include all units of measurement where appropriate.

In addition, you should include copies of all your group's load-extension curves and a completed version of the table of data given in this script. You may include photographs / diagrams / drawings if you wish, to enhance your submission.

Questions to answer within your Analysis:

As well as the specific measurements and calculations mentioned in the "experimental details" section above...you should, in your discussion of the results, try to answer the following:

1. Why do the LOAD / EXTENSION curves have the forms they have?

2. In what ways do the metals behave differently?

3. How do the appearances of the metal specimens differ from each other after testing?

4. How do you think this is related to their physical structure?

5. How do the specimens compare in their ductility?

6. How do the specimens compare in the load that they are capable of bearing before fracture?

7. How can these facts be useful to Engineers, Designers and Architects?
