Overview

Almost 61 million people in America identify as Hispanic / Latino. Latinos have become America's largest ethnic group and are quickly becoming America's most important ethnic voters. About 300,000 Latinos become U.S. citizens every year and about 500,000 young Latinos / Latinas turn 18 every year. Moreover, Hispanic / Latinos are a far more heterogeneous group of Americans. They are racially, ethnically, and geographically diverse and have equally diverse political opinions.

Speaking of political activity, it is undeniable that here in Florida, and in other battleground states (Arizona, Texas, and Nevada), that the Latino vote has made a major impact in local, state, and national elections. However, the Latino vote is anything but homogeneous or predictable. For example, in 2020 Florida Latinos went for Donald Trump, while Arizona voters gave the nod to Joe Biden.

Researchers tell us that unlike other minority groups, the Hispanic / Latino vote is influenced by a myriad of factors including geography, country of origin, specific policies, and generation.

We will be examining this multifaceted group of voters to better understand how they are shaping the future.

Task

Question A. In what ways are Latinos, as a voting group, similar to other ethnic and racial groups in America? In what ways are Latinos different from other ethnic and racial voter groups?
