In the Formation of Man, Montessori writes that the child has "a teacher within himself and that this inner teacher also follows a programme and a technique of education."

In your reading from the 1946 lectures, Montessori discusses a number of examples and ways that children actively undertake development, such as an infant playing with his mother's hair, or a boy carrying a very heavy jug of water.
