In response to shifting economic situations, these strategies have been used in different ways over time. For instance, in an effort to boost the economy during the 2008 financial crisis, the Fed cut interest rates to almost zero and made significant asset purchases. The Fed started to shrink its balance sheet and gradually boost interest rates as the economy started to improve. But the Fed responded to the COVID-19 outbreak by cutting interest rates once further and launching fresh asset acquisition initiatives to boost the economy.
