What recommendations/strategies (short or long run) would you give to Oxfam with the goal of reducing the chances of what happened in Haiti?
Basically what happened was:
- Oxfam's Haiti country director Roland van Hauwermeiren and other senior/regular staff were caught hiring prostitutes and exchanging aid for prostitutes in Haiti.
- In Haiti prostitutes are ilegal and penalized by law.
- Haiti suffered from a devastating earthquake in 2010
- These staff members are part of the UK charity called Oxfam.
- There were allegations of sexual misconduct and an internal investigation was started in order to see what was happening due to the pressure of the UK's government (which is Oxfam's primary source of money). The report made by Oxfam was vague and facilitated staff members with the option of resigning for full cooperation in the investigation (in order to not cause any sign of shock or internal problems to the public and stakeholders).
-Because the report was vague and implied that the situation was delt with, nothing came out of it, unitl a whistleblower in 2018 informed the media generating the Oxfam sexual scandal of 2018.
-Now Oxfam is in a difficult situation, with government cutting funds, donnors distrusting the charity stopped donating (7000 donnors stopped), public outrage, public image of the NGO being low.
