In an orthogonal cutting experiment, with a 10-degree rake angle cutting tool, the chip velocity was measured to be 80% of the cutting speed. Determine the shear angle. In the same experiment, the shear force was determined to be 400 lbs and the normal to the shear force was determined to be 500 lbs. Set up the two equations for these two forces. Solve for the main component of the cutting force and the tangential (thrust) force. Using these values of the forces compute the frictional force at the rake face and its normal force. Calculate the velocity in shear, and the ratio of power consumed in friction to the total power. The cutting speed used in the experiment was 300 fpm.
