In this Assignment you will look at how the need for counsel has changed through the years and how the United States Supreme Court has responded to that need.

First, research the history of the Right to Counsel in the United States. You may use the sources provided in this unit, as well as your text for this Assignment.

Next, draft a short essay explaining the development of the Right to Counsel in the U.S. Consider the historical developments in the U.S. legal system that made it more difficult for a person to represent him or herself in a criminal case. For instance, how are prosecutions different now than they were 100 years ago?

Discuss at least three examples of how prosecutions have changed. You should research and explain the facts, analysis, and ultimate holding of at least four major Supreme Court cases that you learned about in your reading and research.

You will be graded based upon your understanding of these cases.

Your paper should be 5-7pages long, double-spaced in 10-12 point font.
