Nathan is a 7-year old Chinese male in the first grade. He is at risk of being permanently expelled from his private school due to impulsive aggressive actions against other children. The school principal has taken a hard line with Nathan and angrily lectures him each time an incident occurs. The teacher, school psychologist, and private therapist recently began meeting regularly with the parents to modify Nathan's Individual Education Plan (IEP) to put new strategies in place for managing his behavior while he makes progress in play therapy.

Nathan's aggression is unpredictable in that he generally gets along well with other children. He is not disruptive in class and is often the first to finish his work. During play time, he likes to play alone and will "tune out" the other children playing around him. When other children come up to talk or play with him, he ignores them. If the other child gives up and finds something else to do, no problems arise with Nathan. However, if the other child continues to pursue an interaction, Nathan will suddenly lash out and hit the child.

Claire and Jim are very worried that Nathan will be kicked out of school. They have a strong marriage, but have limited help from extended family. Both parents work full-time and they have very few relatives in the area, and only see these relatives occasionally.

Based on the counseling theories below, develop two group counseling interventions supported by literature.

A minimum of one of these interventions should be grounded in play therapy.

Theory 1: Reality Therapy and Choice Theory

Theory 2: Person-centered Theory
