Question: the mention of the SWOT analysis was interesting. A leader of a company needs to be able to perform SWOT analysis agreed. One question arose in reading your response was whether the vision statement comes first or SWOT analysis.
SWOT analysis is used when companies build out a strategy, but the vision statement stays consistent between strategies. So, while strategies are changing as will SWOT analysis, the North Star that the vision statement is remains constant pointing everything else including strategies and SWOT analysis towards it. I do agree that to better differentiate product lines and sustain a competitive advantage that SWOT analysis is useful.
It is almost like there is this constant alignment going on towards the vision statement. A mindset or process that is followed and adhered to. A question for my classmates is how does the restructuring or reorganization of a company fit (Blenko, Mankins, & Rogers, 2010)? Should decisions around reorgs be made ensuring it fits into the company's vision as a guiding principle (Collins & Porras, 1996)?
This is something I found interesting because many reorgs seek to improve the performance of a company, but many times do not result in that.
My opinion is that reorgs, acquisitions of other companies, and other key decisions should be weighed against the vision and tested for alignment. I would be interested in my classmate's perspectives on this.
