Jennifer, the Accounts Payable Manager of Company ABC, must complete performance appraisals for five (5) team members. Each team member performs the same tasks and have the same responsibilities as all five (5) team members are in the Accounts Payable Clerk role. Jennifer is evaluating team member performance for the period April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021 using the 5-point scale that was provided by the HR department.

You are the HR Manager at Company ABC and responsible for training Managers to conduct effective performance appraisals reviewing appraisal results to ensure consistent application of rating criteria and to avoid common rating errors.

You have reviewed the appraisals completed by Jennifer for her five (5) team members and notice the following:

a) Although a 5-point scale is provided to evaluate performance all team members were rated a 3.

b) After reading the performance appraisal for Mark, one of the Accounts Payable Clerks, you realize that Jennifer included commentary to suggest that Mark was below average for three of the four core competencies required. However, Mark was rated average based on the rating for one of the four core competencies.

c) After reading the performance appraisal for Liz, one of the Accounts Payable Clerks, you realize that Jennifer emphasized Liz's great work on a project in February 2021 and seems to have relied heavily on that example to rate Liz's performance as a three (3) even though multiple incidents happened earlier in the year that would suggest poor performance.
