Motivation of staff members in health care organizations is complex and multifaceted. Let us assume that you have recently been named the director of the radiation oncology unit of your midsized hospital that unfortunately has been ranked in the bottom quartile for patient and staff satisfaction scores. Your staff consists of three physicians, five technicians, four nurses, and a number of ancillary staff. You encounter a staff that appears to be dispirited, is quick to blame others for problems in the unit, and has an unusually high rate of absenteeism. What do you propose to do to diagnose the issues in the unit and help improve employee performance?
