Problem:
We talked about "first impressions" and how we all have our first impressions of the things we read. We also talked about the importance of developing our first impressions into second and third impressions. In order to participate in this group discussion, you'll need to have read the first 50 pages of our common text, Between the World and Me. It's obvious that we're all engaged in our "first impressions" of this work, so what are they? What are your first impressions of this book?
As students, we should always be taking notes of the things we read, and we should be taking notes about this text as we read it through. I don't know what stands out to you in the first 50 pages of this book, but I know what stands out to me... That said, please share a little about what's standing out to you in the opening sections of this read. I'll give you an example here: I think it's interesting that this book is in a letter form. I know that when I write a letter, it's to an audience of one, not many, so I feel like I'm privy to a private discussion when I read through the early stages of this book. I also find it interesting how scholarly this writer is. I find it interesting that he references Malcolm X a lot. These are some examples of what I see in the early stages of this book, and yes, I have my first impressions on these things.
So, please include the following in your initial post (which is due by Friday):
- What are the first impressions of this book and the subject matter?
- What are some of the things that are standing out in this book?
- What are the issues that are being raised in the early stages of this work?
- What questions That can be developed from this book? This is important, so please be sure to do this.
- to develop at least one question you have for the first 50 pages of this book. In order for us to comment on your initial post, it's helpful if we can talk about, and try to answer, any questions.
Okay class. These are the talking points and requirements for our Week 7 group discussion
