Critically examine the developmental role played by the state in ONE nation of the developing world in relation to ONE policy area of your choice.

For example, you may choose to focus on the role that the Thai state has played in the area of labour relations, or may wish to focus on the role that the Bolivian state has played in relation to women and gender issues. Alternatively, you might choose to focus on the role that the Burmese state has played in the area of ethnic relations or you could choose to examine what role the Mexican state has played in dealing with environmental issues. You might even choose to examine the responses of the state in Egypt to the rise of social movements.

Note that you are being asked to 'critically examine' the role-played by the state in relation to one of more aspects of the development process. This means that you should strive to go beyond a simple descriptive account of what the state has done in relation to one or other issue. Rather, you should also be endeavouring to explain why the state has played the role it has. In turn, this means that you would need to investigate and demonstrate some understanding of the particular social forces and interests (both external and internal) that have shaped processes of state policymaking in the area that you are choosing to focus on.
