Assignment:

The goal ofthis discussion is to explore the importance of thinking comprehensively when trying to research a complex issue. To be comprehensive means to try to think of all possible variables that could be in?uencing the phenomenon you are researching.

Imagine you are a professor developing a research study to try to comprehensively evaluate what factors predict student attendance levels to your class across a semester. We discussed in the Lecture 04 video that just looking at a single variable, such as whether the class is part of your major, or whether you are interested in the topic - is not adequate to comprehensively evaluating all factors that may predict class attendance.

What other variables can you think of that may relate to the number of days students attend a particular class across the semester? Choose variables that could relate to most or all students (ex. the distance they live from the class), notjust a unique situation that mightonly apply to rare instances (like getting in an accident on the way to school).

1. Provide a list of a minimum of 4 variables you would want to consider (other than those already mentioned) when developing your comprehensive model of student attendance.

2. For each item on your list, provide a brief explanation about how you think the variable relates to the outcome measure of class attendance. Think about our discussion on correlations. Are the two variables positively related? Negatively related? Indirectly related through another variable? (Ex. Distance from class may be negatively related to class attendance- the further they live, the less likely they are to attend.)
