Assignment:
This assignment will emulate a scenario where the decision maker (your boss or your boss's boss) is not working in the same working environment. Perhaps in the company's headquarters. You were supposed to make a presentation to this person. The assignment is about this presentation. This person had to cancel the visit and consequently the presentation. This presentation is very important to you. Your future in the company depends on it. So, it is decided that you (and your team mates) will submit a video instead of a presentation. This video is supposed to have the same effect of the canceled presentation.
The company you work for is located at 1750 Finch Ave. East, Toronto, ON, M2J 2X5. Part of your suppliers are in Europe and part of them are in Asia. Most of your clients are in South California and North of Mexico. The purchases you make are usually full container load and the shipments to your clients vary from few boxes to 50 MT. There is a study showing the average weight of your shipment is around 5 MT.
You are the newly hired Logistics Manager. You want to convince your superior to make changes in the structure of the company. In order to do that you need to assess various possibilities. You will suggest how the company should structure itself in terms of logistics (your department). You are going to present your version of how the department/company should work from now on. So you will build a plan how to explain to your boss (structure the plan in a report to be submitted with the presentation). You will explain the various aspects that led you to this conclusion/suggestion and then present the new structure. Two files should be submitted: Report and Presentation (video or voiced over ppt)
You should go over at least the following:
- Importance of the logistics and supply chain in a company (you are selling your department).
- Modes of transportation for the inbound and outbound logistics. Compare and contrast the alternatives.
- How you are going to manage the global transportation aspects. What aspects should be considered and how you plan to address them.
- Are you involving freight forwarder or 3rd party logistics? Why? How would you choose them?
- How you are going to manage the risk involved in the daily operation under your department.
- What are the challenges and issues you foresee for the company and your department.
