Please proof read and edit my paper of the code of ethics provision 8.
The ANA Code of Ethics advances the nurse's professional role and practice by providing a framework for ethical practice. It outlines the values and commitments of the nursing profession, the standards of conduct, and nurses' ethical obligations. By adhering to the Code, nurses can ensure that they practice ethically, enhancing their professionalism and the quality of care they provide. The Code I picked represents nurses' roles in general. Provision 8 of the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics states: "The nurse collaborates with other health professionals and the public to protect human rights, promote health diplomacy, and reduce health disparities" (American Nurses Association, 2015).
In my own words, this provision emphasizes the role of nurses in many four aspects.
1- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals: It encourages nurses to collaborate with other health professionals and the public to promote patient health and social well-being. This collaboration involves promoting and restoring health and alleviating suffering.
2-Protection of Human Rights: This part of provision 8 emphasizes nurses' responsibility to advocate that patients receive equitable access to healthcare services and are treated with dignity and respect.
3- Promotion of Health Diplomacy: involves negotiating and applying various political, legal, and social approaches to address health-related challenges at local, national, and international levels. For example, promoting preventive care and basic human needs for food, health, and education. (Hunter et al., 2013).
4- Reduction of Health Disparities: Nurses work to reduce health disparities by addressing social determinants of health, advocating for underserved populations, and promoting health equity in healthcare delivery.
Reading Provision 8 highlighted the importance of nurses' roles in collaboration, advocacy, and addressing health disparities. It emphasized the need for nurses to engage with diverse stakeholders, including other healthcare professionals, policymakers, and communities, to promote social justice and advance public health goals. For example, nurses are more than just caregivers we should work together with all entities to contribute positively to the population. After the covid-19 pandemic, the nurse ratio of patients increased drastically, which impacted the quality of care provided, and so many aspects of nursing care are neglected because we focus more on treating the symptoms but not the person. This provision is a reminder that human beings deserve the best quality of care.
In my practice, I will apply the knowledge from this provision by actively advocating for my patients' rights and working towards reducing health disparities. This could involve incorporating cultural competence techniques to see patients as a whole and provide holistic care. This technique will lead "to appropriate services for minority group members, such as tailored preventive care, timely health screenings, indicated diagnostic tests, and early intervention and treatment" (Brach & Fraser, 2002). Nowadays, healthcare is like an industry, so advocating for policies that improve access to healthcare for underserved populations, educating the public about health disparities, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to develop strategies to address these disparities will be part of my nursing practice.
